Signs of gum disease

According to a study conducted by Purdue University, there’s a connection between gum disease and heart disease in dogs. When tartar is allowed to form on a dog’s gum line, it makes a home for anaerobic bacteria that multiply and work their way into the pockets around the roots of a dog’s teeth. These pockets grow larger, and the teeth eventually fall out.
The bacteria now has a route directly into the blood stream where it collects in the dog’s heart organ and builds up just like plaque in an unhealthy human heart. Left unchecked, the dog develops heart disease and will eventually die.
Signs of Gum Disease:

Red, swollen,or bleeding gums

Crusty white or yellowish build up along the gum line

Foul breath

Loose or missing teeth

Older patients need clean teeth too!!

The reason senior pets are handled more cautiously for anesthesia is because they are more likely to have a systemic illness. That’s why additional tests are run on older pets prior to scheduling procedures requiring anesthesia. These tests usually include a complete blood panel, urinalysis, chest x-rays and a BNP test which checks for certain forms of heart disease. If your older doggy is not a good candidate for anesthesia, it is still very important to get his or her teeth cleaned! Here are Jasmine and Ben, 16 years basset hound and 15 years old labrador. They both got their non anesthesic dental cleanings with Miami Natural Pet Care and did very well.

Please call us for an appointment.

Cats are obligate carnivores, although pet cats consume a lot of plant material if they are fed dry cat food. None of the teeth of cats, including their molars, have grinding surfaces; they clearly evolved to eat “meat”. Permanent teeth cat formula:3incisors 1canine  3 premolars 1molar. 3 1 2 1 = 15

So about 30 teeth total.

Incisors
Cats have six incisors in the maxilla and six in the mandible.

Canines
There is one canine tooth in each quadrant of the mouth. These teeth have a single root.

Premolars

Cats have three premolars in the maxilla and two in the mandible on each side.

The maxillary 1st premolar is normally missing and the 2nd premolar is very small and often not visible. The 3rd maxillary premolar is present. The 4th premolar is termed the carnassial tooth.
The mandibular 1st and 2nd premolars are normally missing. The 3rd and 4th premolars are present.
Molars
Cats have one molar in each quadrant of the mouth. The maxillary molars form a grinding surface. The mandibular molars are called the carnassial teeth.
